On-going Projects

“Development of a Carpathian Ecological Network: Strengthening the Capacities of the Carpathian EcoRegion Initiative (CERI) in Supporting the Implementation of the Carpathian Convention”
CERI, and partners, are currently implementing a MATRA BBI project. The project aims to ‘support the implementation of the Carpathian Convention through the development and realization of a coherent transboundary ecological network as part of sustainable development in the Carpathians. The project focuses its activities primarily in Romania, Ukraine and Serbia with important extensions into the 4 Carpathian EU member states, and it works for preventing large-scale biodiversity loss throughout the Carpathians.
Immediate objectives of this proposal are strengthening the capacities of the CERI and design of a coherent transboundary ecological network. Expected outcomes include: increased understanding of the NGOs on the principles and techniques of ecological network development and implementation (Natura 2000, Emerald, PEEN); a joint Carpathian Biodiversity Information System (GIS, database structure, data storage, set up criteria for adding data and methodology); and concept for a Carpathian ecological network based on an analysis of existing protected areas, (p)SCIs and SPAs and other priority areas linked trough a network of ecological corridors for a number of flagship species and taking into account the requirements of the Birds and Habitats Directives, the CBD and the PEEN.

“Proposal for Western Carpathian Ecological Network as a precondition for effective cross-border nature protection“

CERI and its German partner IBN – Institut für Biodiversität (www.biodiv.de) start this common project supported by DBU – Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (www.dbu.de). The aim of the project is to build Carpathian Biodiversity Information System, design the Western Carpathian Ecological Network on a regional scale, as a complement to the ecological network, which is under preparation in Ukrainian, Romanian and Serbian part of the Carpathians and to elaborate a strategic action plan outlining the future process of its implementation. This will contribute to the strengthening of the protection of the areas with internationally (regionally) as well as nationally important species and biotopes through coherent method for data collection and processing, through mobilization of the experts to gather missing data (on species, biotopes), through processing of the gathered and already existing data into the common Biodiversity Information System of the Western Carpathians. These activities support implementation of the Carpathian Convention in the region. They contribute to strengthening of the capacities of the Carpathian Ecoregion Initiative.

Project period: February 2008 – January 2010

CERI partners: Institute for Nature Conservation – Polish Academy of Sciences, Kraków; Daphne – Institute of Applied Ecology CZ; Institute of Botany, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava; E-misszió – Environmental and Nature Conservation Association.

"World of Carpathians – Awareness Raising about the Carpathian Biodiversity"

The period from December 2007 until December 2009 is dedicated to DBU (German Fund for the Environment, www.dbu.de) funded project “World of Carpathians – Awareness Raising about the Carpathian Biodiversity".

The project is focused on building awareness and promoting Carpathian mountain curricula throughout the region. It supports the preparation of methodical teaching material for teachers and other educators and information material for public. Both materials will be published in three language versions: in English, Slovak and Polish and will be distributed in seven Carpathian countries and in other EU states. Their distribution will be linked with the media promotion and their presentation at various international events. To transfer also know-how, the main form of distribution of the teaching handbook will be training session for teachers and other educators. A set of teaching tools prepared on the basis of the handbook will be presented together with possibilities of the use of handbook during the classes. As the project will lead to the improvement of environmental awareness, and thus, to the enhancement of conservation of mountain ecosystems, the project ought to significantly contribute to the Carpathian Convention.

The project leading organisation is Thüringer Ökoherz e.V., Germany (www.oekoherz.de), co-operating partners are DAPHNE – Institute of Applied Ecology, Bratislava, Slovakia and Carpathian EcoRegion Initiative.
