Summit
Danube-Carpathian Summit (Bucharest, April 29-30, 2001)
On 29-30 April 2001, Presidents and Ministers came together for an unprecedented meeting - a Summit devoted entirely to environmental conservation and development in the Carpathian and Danube region. Hosted by the Romanian Government in co-operation with the WWF International Danube-Carpathian Programme, the Summit was held in Bucharest and co-chaired by the President of Romania and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, WWF President Emeritus.
Key representatives from the region met to agree actions for achieving development which would "work with nature" whilst supporting local economies and cultural heritage. The meeting involved 9 Heads of State, 8 Environment Ministers and other high level officials, decision makers from major international organisations (e.g. World Bank, UN, EU and OECD), business leaders and NGOs. The 14 countries unanimously adopted a Declaration on Environment and Sustainable Development in the region. Over 400 participants and 380 journalists attended the ground-breaking meetings, news of which was covered by over 120 media organisations.
The summit was successfully in achieving a number of major conservation outcomes, not least of which was the increased importance countries of the region have now placed on local, national and multilateral steps to achieve protection of the environment and work towards sustainable development in the Carpathians. During the Summit, the Vision, priority actions and model project areas of the Carpathian EcoRegion Initiative were highlighted and heralded as the building blocks for future cooperation and action.
