Summit

Major Outcomes from the Summit

(Bucharest, 29-30 April 2001)

A Declaration on Environment and Sustainable Development in the Carpathian-Danube Region was unanimously adopted by 14 countries.

The Declaration will be used as part of Central and Eastern Europe's contribution to the Rio+10: World Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg 2002.

Government level commitment was given to a process of formalising ecoregion conservation in the Carpathians - all Carpathian countries were in favour of taking steps towards a legal framework for the Carpathians (as proposed by Ukraine, supported by Poland; and facilitated by UNEP).

The Romanian government made a major commitment to sustainable forestry in Romania (covering 1 million hectares, one sixth of Romania's forests) and supporting statements were given by major wood users and retailers such as IKEA.

Major publicity for the Carpathian EcoRegion Initiative. Among the presentations, Sissi Samec (WWF) spoke at the Ministerial Meeting; Rafal Serafin (EPCE Poland) and Christoph Promberger (Carpathian Large Carnivore Project) at the Business-NGO Forum (over 200 participants); and Suzie Holt (WWF) chaired a press conference with a panel of the Initiative's partners.

Commitment by all for a major Donors meeting for the Carpathians.

Agreement among the 5 countries of the Tisza River basin (badly damaged by last year's cyanide spill) was reached.

The four countries of the Lower Danube River Region presented specific actions they have taken to fulfil the commitments they made last year when they signed the Lower Danube Green Corridor Agreement.

The Stability Pact committed to hold a Danube donors conference.
